Towards a Pest-Free Otago Peninsula

The Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group (OPBG) has been set up by the local community to facilitate the removal of animal pests on the Otago Peninsula (9,500 ha) to protect the area’s biodiversity, lifestyle, and economic values

Possums have been identified as the most controllable of the many animal pests on the Otago Peninsula, and are the primary focus of the OPBG in the first stages of working towards our vision: “A Pest Free Peninsula By 2050”

The OPBG are working with other community members and groups, an advisory team, and skilled subcontractors. This collaborative approach has produced some great results so far to reduce possums to negligible levels and prevent re-invasion. The goal is to achieve a RTC of 1% or less by 2018 over the entire Peninsula.

Current Status (August 2016)

The Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group (OPBG) is rapidly approaching a total of 10,000 possums removed from the Otago Peninsula! This incredible achievement is all thanks to a huge five-year effort from volunteers, residents, contractors, the team at OPBG, and our funders and supporters.
