Totara, ngaio and kowhai are characteristic of the drier slopes, with pate and fuchsia trees found in the damp gullies. From late winter through to early summer fuchsia and kowhai are a source of nectar for bellbird and tui. Rotting logs and leaf litter are habitat for Peripatus, the velvet worm. But the name is misleading, as this strange animal is neither a worm nor a caterpillar.
